Tanzania is taking bold steps to revolutionize its gemstone industry, with a focus on its precious Tanzanite. The nation's vision is to transform Mirerani and Arusha into Africa's leading gemstone trading hubs.
During a recent meeting with small-scale miners and gemstone traders, Tanzania's Minister of Minerals, Anthony Mavunde, unveiled a comprehensive strategy to enhance the global appeal and value of Tanzanite. But here's where it gets controversial: the government plans to reintroduce gemstone auctions, a move aimed at fostering transparency and competition in the trade.
Mavunde highlighted the impressive progress of the Tanzanite Exchange Centre (TEC), which is nearing completion at a staggering 98%. This centre is designed to be a one-stop shop for international buyers, offering banking services, hotels, and a business-friendly environment all under one roof.
However, the most intriguing part of Mavunde's announcement was the potential discovery of Tanzanite deposits beyond the Mirerani restricted area. The government is actively conducting geological studies to identify new sources of this precious gemstone.
On the challenges faced by small-scale miners, Mavunde assured that the government is working on facilitating access to capital through guarantee funds, particularly targeting youth and women miners. The government has also taken steps to support miners by purchasing 15 drilling machines to boost production.
Jeremiah Kituyo, Chairperson of the Tanzania Brokers Association (CHAMMATA), emphasized the association's commitment to collaborating with the government to curb Tanzanite smuggling and strengthen oversight in the gemstone trade.
