In a bold move, the NFL has penalized Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua with a $25,000 fine due to his outspoken remarks regarding officiating. This decision was reported by a source to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo on Friday.
Earlier this week, during a livestream session with popular streamers N3on and Adin Ross, Nacua did not hold back his criticism of the league's officials. "The refs are the worst," he stated emphatically, adding, "These guys are lawyers. They want to be on TV too. You don’t think he's texting his friends in the group chat like, ‘Yo, you guys just saw me on Sunday Night Football. That wasn’t P.I. (pass interference), but I called it.’" This candid outburst highlights the frustrations many players feel about the impact of officiating on the game.
In addition to his critical comments about the referees, Nacua faced backlash for an inappropriate gesture he made during the livestream, which was labeled as "antisemitic in nature." He publicly apologized before the Rams’ game on Thursday, while the NFL released a statement denouncing antisemitism, although they did not mention him by name.
After the Rams' overtime defeat against the Seattle Seahawks, Nacua continued to express his dissatisfaction with the officiating. Remarkably, after achieving a personal best of 225 receiving yards on 12 catches, he shared a tweet shortly after the game that seemed to address the controversial officiating decisions. However, he later deleted the tweet, a move that raised eyebrows among fans and commentators alike.
When questioned by reporters about the deleted message, Nacua explained that it stemmed from "a lack of awareness" and was merely an expression of frustration. While it remains unclear if his anger was directed at a particular call, the game featured several contentious decisions, notably an offensive penalty against the Rams on the one-yard line which nullified a touchdown.
One of the most discussed moments involved a review that ultimately allowed the Seahawks to tie the game. In a dramatic fourth-quarter comeback, Seattle appeared to fall short of a two-point conversion when a pass seemed incomplete. However, as the teams prepared for the kickoff, the officiating crew announced they were reviewing the play. The review concluded that the pass had gone backward, classifying it as a live ball that was recovered in the end zone by the Seahawks, thus converting the attempt successfully and equalizing the score.
Nacua managed to score in overtime, giving the Rams a brief lead, yet the Seahawks responded by driving down the field to secure a matching touchdown, eventually winning on a two-point conversion.
Head coach Sean McVay acknowledged the peculiarity of the situation, stating, "I’ve never quite seen anything like what happened on the 2-point conversion where you are lined up to kick off, then they say it’s a fumble because they had a clear and obvious recovery. Very interesting; I didn’t get a clear explanation of everything that went on just because of some of the timing of it. I’ve never seen anything - or never been a part of anything - like that, and I’ve grown up around this game."
When asked about Nacua's deleted tweet, McVay chose not to comment since he hadn’t seen it himself, but he did express his support for the young receiver.
