Anwar Ibrahim, Malaysia's Prime Minister, has revealed a significant financial achievement. The government has reportedly saved approximately RM1 billion by adopting generic drugs over expensive originator medicines. This shift in procurement strategy is a strategic move away from the costly drugs imported from the US and Europe, which can cost tens of thousands of ringgit per pill. Instead, the government is now sourcing medications from more affordable countries like India, Turkey, Brazil, and China, ensuring the same quality and efficacy at a fraction of the cost. Anwar emphasizes the importance of this change, stating that Malaysia should have embraced generic medicines earlier, breaking free from the outdated pride in expensive medications from the US and Europe. This decision is part of a broader effort to streamline public health infrastructure projects, with a focus on reducing construction timelines. The new Seberang Jaya hospital building, for instance, took almost a decade to complete, highlighting the need for faster land approvals and improved contractor performance. The health minister, Dzulkefly Ahmad, supports this initiative, confirming that generic drugs are safe and effective, and that this policy has led to substantial savings. He also addressed the issue of delayed health projects, stating that a development committee is reviewing these projects to ensure timely completion. The government aims to deliver these projects within a reasonable timeframe, as the people's wait is a significant inconvenience. This initiative is a step towards making healthcare more accessible and cost-effective for the Malaysian population.
