In a shocking accusation, Dr. Ladan Salihu, a prominent figure within the All Democratic Congress (ADC), has leveled a serious charge against the Federal Government: weaponizing anti-corruption agencies to target political opponents. Salihu didn't mince words, pointing directly to what he sees as a pattern of selective justice. He highlighted the contrasting treatment of former officials like Abubakar Malami, the ex-Attorney-General of the Federation, and Yahaya Bello, the former Governor of Kogi State. While Malami faces legal scrutiny, Bello, Salihu argues, enjoys freedom due to his continued affiliation with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
And this is the part most people miss: Salihu recalled a telling remark attributed to former APC National Chairman Adams Oshiomhole during the Buhari administration, suggesting that membership in the ruling party often guaranteed protection from prosecution. This, Salihu claims, is the 'incubation period' of a deeply troubling trend where the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is being used as a tool for coercion, harassment, and intimidation against opposition figures.
But here's where it gets controversial: Salihu boldly asserts that the credibility of Nigeria's anti-corruption fight hangs in the balance. He argues that the continued detention of opposition figures while prominent ruling party members remain untouched raises serious concerns about the independence and impartiality of these agencies. He challenges the government to prove its commitment to genuine anti-corruption efforts by subjecting sitting ministers or high-profile APC officials to the same scrutiny as Malami.
This accusation echoes a growing chorus of concern from opposition leaders. A coalition, including Atiku, Mark, and Peter Obi, has similarly accused President Tinubu of weaponizing the EFCC to weaken the opposition ahead of the 2027 elections. These allegations paint a picture of a potentially politicized anti-corruption drive, raising crucial questions about the rule of law and fairness in Nigerian politics.
